A Wonderful Day at the Sydney Writer's Festival

Published May 26, 2010

We strode into the stunning Admiralty House prepared to write.

All Stage 3 HPS students were feeling very important. We had some time to chat before the Governor General, Her Excellency Quentin Bryce, came to talk to us about why she organised the event. She said that she wanted to learn more about the public community. She was very dignified and extremely kind. The workshop authors were then introduced to us.

First, we met Deborah Abela. She wrote the ‘Max Remy’ series, ‘Auralie Bonhoffen’, and ‘Grimsville’. Deborah showed us how to write excellent beginnings and ways to describe characters to make them interesting. She said that if you are stuck on your story, add some trouble!

Next, we went to Kate Forsyth who wrote ‘The Puzzle Ring’ and ‘The Chain of Charms’ series. She taught us ways to remember writing tips by making acronyms and the 5 W’s. She also told us how to make a story timeline.

After Kate Forsyth we had a refreshments break where we were served beverages.

Last, we went to Belinda Murrell. She demonstrated how to use adjectives effectively when describing things. We then wrote the middle and end of our exciting stories.

Afterwards, everyone received a free book and bookmarks. We were given ‘The Ruby Talisman’ written by Belinda Murrell. After that we had afternoon tea, which included sandwiches, cupcakes, biscuits, fruit salad, jelly and drinks.

We felt very honoured to be chosen to go to this wonderful workshop and to meet the Governor General and the amazing authors. Thank you Mr McMichael and Ms Porter for attending with us.
