Children from Haberfield attended the Literature Festival held at Newington College on Thursday 2nd April. The aim of the Festival is to encourage students to take part in the adventure of books and reading. Among the authors who spoke on the day were Jackie French, John Flanagan and Andy Wright.
Jackie French's writing career spans 17 years, 48 wombats, 132 books and over 50 awards in Australia and overseas. In 2000, her book Hitler’s Daughter was awarded the CBC Younger Readers’ Award. Her latest novel, A Rose for the Anzac Boys was released in April. John Flanagan's best known work is the Ranger’s Apprentice series. He originally wrote the books for his son to encourage him to read. Prior to becoming a novelist, John did advertising and television commercials. He also co -created the television series Hey Dad! Andy Wright has told stories all around the world performing in theatres, schools, conferences, and festivals, from audiences of 30 to audiences of 3000. He uses his storytelling to promote literacy, reading, and the love of literature. For teenagers and adults, Andy performs a variety of horror stories, guaranteed to please and scare, many of these stories link strongly into the history and English curriculum, with elements common to Shakespeare and Spencer.
All children from Haberfield enjoyed listening to the authors immensely. A special thank you to Mr Fraser for his organisation of the day!
As a special treat this week, Haberfield students have also had the opportunity to meet and listen to Maureen Bartlett in our school library, another successful Australian author.
