LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY- NSW PARLIAMENT HOUSE

Our Year 6 students along with 93 other Youth Members had the honour of attending the Youth Peace Parliament. For many, this was the first time that they had been within the chambers of Parliament House.

The Hon. Linda Burney MP Minister for the State and Minister for Community Affairs gave the official welcome.

The Hon. Katrina Hodgkinson MP Nationals Member for Burrinjuck briefed all Members in parliamentary procedure.

Each party was then required to put forward a number of motions that were thought up and voted on by the Youth Peace Parliamentarians. This was an opportunity to brainstorm in the party room, negotiate in the corridors and debate on the floor of the Legislative Assembly.

This was a real-life simulation of our parliament and was a most valuable opportunity for our students to develop public speaking skills along with experiencing first-hand how our laws are created.

Congratulations to Alex G and Simone T, who were awarded the “Advocate of Peace” award, given to youths who demonstrated passion and commitment to peace through their public speaking and actions throughout the day.
