Haberfield Public School

We are proud of our excellent academic achievements. Our school aims to bring out the best in each individual through the collaboration of students, staff and the community. This is achieved through creating an enjoyable and stimulating environment.

Computers

Technology

We believe that technology facilitates engaging and interactive learning. We support our students in engaging in video conferencing links to other schools, creating podcasts and participating in interactive lessons in our classrooms using interactive whiteboards. Our school has an operational computer lab and all classrooms throughout the school have computers that are networked.

Students regularly engage in online learning programs and develop their skills utilising a variety of technological resources. Interactive learning activities are used in all Key Learning Areas in classrooms to develop a deep knowledge and understanding of these areas.

Curriculum

At Haberfield Public School, our students are catered for through offering a wide variety of educational programs and extra-curricular activities which aim to meet the needs of each individual child. We ensure that we adhere to the NSW Board of Studies Syllabus requirements for K-6 whilst engaging our staff in regular professional development.

The Board of Studies develops a syllabus for each of the six key learning areas. Along with a defined aim, each syllabus has a set of objectives and outcomes, expressed in terms of knowledge and understandings, skills, values and attitudes.

All students participate in weekly music lessons conducted by our music specialist Mr David Collins-White, who is also the current Sydney Region Musical Director. Children participate in choral work, instrument development and in reading musical notation. Live concerts are performed by Oz Opera and Musica Viva throughout the school year.

Participation in the extra curricular instrumental program is ever increasing, with over 200 students now involved in choir, band, guitar, recorder and string programs. The La Festa performing arts concert is a showpiece of our school and features all performing ensembles and a number of talented students. It also serves as a fundraising event that raises money towards school programs.

Gifted and Talented Education

Haberfield Public School is responsive to the educational needs of all students. Enriched programs are provided for those students who typically require a differentiated curriculum that is sensitive and responsive to their diverse styles of learning. Classes for gifted and talented students were established in 1997 from Year 1 to Year 6 and they continue to offer a flexible and enriched curriculum across all areas of learning. This includes accelerated programs in Mathematics and English, together with enrichment programs in historical, artistic and cultural studies. Assessment of students' suitability to these programs is continually reviewed.

Languages

All children K-5 at Haberfield Public participate in the Languages other than English (LOTE) program. Students have the choice to study either the Chinese or Italian language. We believe that by learning a second language, students will develop communication skills and a knowledge that will assist them to understand language, culture and humanity, thus contributing to the development of culturally aware citizens.
