Children in Years K-5 at Haberfield Public School study either the Chinese or Italian Language. In Languages, students learn to recognise the importance of language in shaping and defining culture and identity.
Whilst studying Chinese language, students develop:
- knowledge, understandings, skills, attitudes and values that enhance their sense of personal, community, national and global identity;
- positive values and attitudes about language;
- recognition of the cultural identity of speakers of a language other than English;
- skills in communicating in a language other than English;
- understandings and knowledge of language as a system.
The Chinese Club meets at lunchtimes and is offered to interested children. Activities include the study of culture, art, crafts, writing and cooking.
Language Clubs can be an exciting way for your child to learn about language along with cultural identities.
Haberfield Public School participates in the annual Chinese Eisteddfod at Strathfield Girls High School and Burwood Girls High School. In this event students compete in poetry recital competitions and a range of prizes are offered.
Children participate in this exciting event, organised by the Chinese Language Education Council, over two weekends and often appear in local media.

Why do children at Haberfield Public School learn Italian?
- Italian is an easy language to learn and it is fun.
- We are living in an Italian community.
- Italian is the language of culture and history.
Our Italian classroom can transport children to another world through music, sport, film, art, costume, festivals, food, internet, excursions, clubs, fashion and history.
The following are some activities that Haberfield Public School children participate in while studying Italian.
- Children participate in the annual “Incontro” Day held at Leichhardt PS. This day involves students socialising with other Port Jackson district school children and they enjoy a series of different cultural and artistic activities in Italian.
- Italian Club will take place in Term 3. It will be held once a week during lunchtime. All children from K-6 will be invited to participate in a range of Italian activities.
- Italian Festival Day is held to celebrate the Italian “Carnivale`”. Children construct cultural masks and parade them with costumes. Performances include the traditional “Tarantella” dance and poem recitals.
