Student Leadership

There is great interest and activity at Haberfield in student leadership. Student leaders form the Prefect Body and the Student Representative Council (SRC).

Becoming a prefect is a valuable goal and the position of prefect forms a valuable part of a pupil’s personal development, opening their mind to new levels of responsibility and participation in a very positive way. Prefects are a tremendous help to the school and play a particularly important role in mentoring younger pupils.

School leaders will be responsible for providing leadership to younger pupils and in helping to sustain our school environment. Our prefect body will also be given opportunities to participate in Student Leadership conferences and in fundraising throughout the course of the year.

The SRC is a group of students elected by their fellow students to represent the school and who organise ways for students to participate in school life. The SRC works democratically to represent the student body in school decision-making. Students work together, with help from a staff member, to improve school life and to contribute students' ideas. Our Leadership Charter outlines that effective student leadership practices provide opportunities for students to:

- feel in control of their learning. This means significant input to rules and procedures, establishing learning goals and tasks, deciding how to work.

- feel competent. This means investigating and responding to issues of survival and quality of life, solving real problems, creating real products.

- feel connected with others. This means cooperative and collaborative learning, peer support, community linkages, mutual respect.

Our House system allows for students to mix with each other in formal and informal settings. Older students learn to care for, and encourage and support younger students. Younger students can identify mentors and role models. One notable feature of the house system is the nomination and election, or appointment, of house captains from the junior and senior divisions. House captains are responsible for rallying fellow house-members and selecting individuals for team events.

Peer Support

Each year our school facilitates a Peer Mentor program with senior students receiving additional training. The trained senior students help facilitate a school-wide, student-led program that aims to develop their self-esteem in leading structured safe activities, foster student support networks with respectful interrelationships, and encourages positive participation in learning
